ABOUT THE HERBS
Solomon’s Seal: is soothing and protective to the mucous membranes and other irritated and enflamed tissues of the body, including the lungs, throat, and gastro-intestinal tract. As an expectorant and demulcent, Solomon’s Seal may help loosen mucous in the lungs.
Osha Root: An anti-viral and anti-bacterial that is especially useful for the respiratory system. Ancient Chinese physicians used it in several ways: as a diaphoretic to sweat out respiratory infections; a diuretic to increase flow of urine; a decongestant to loosen congestion; a carminative (induces expulsion of gas from stomach or intestines); and as a “bitter” to help stimulate the GI Tract and thus the appetite.
Oregon Grape Root: This woodland plant, native to the Pacific Northwest, contains berberine, an anti-bacterial. It is helpful against a wide variety of bacteria in either local or systemic (system-wide) bacterial infections, including general colds, lung congestion, earaches, toothaches, and more. Considered a very effective replacement for the endangered herb Goldenseal.
Mullein Leaf: Historically used by native cultures to soothe irritated membranes and any cough reflex where there is a lack of secretion (i.e. harsh, dry coughs).
Usnea: A lichen that grows on oak trees in the cool, damp forests of the Pacific Northwest. It is known in Chinese medicine as an immune system tonic, and for respiratory health, especially in moderating inflammation and coughing.
Horsetail: A historically esteemed herb, Horsetail contains silica, which is especially helpful for those who are allergic to many different things, because it helps strengthen weak mucous membranes. When weak, membranes are easily irritated by foreign substances, giving rise to allergies, especially in the sinuses.
